Hold Off Until Someone Has Looked

A door that has left its track is under spring tension and often hanging from only part of its hardware. Pushing it back with your hands, or running the opener to coax it along, can drop the entire door or fold panels beyond saving.

Track problems usually begin with a vehicle bump, a failed cable, rollers worn to the point of slipping, or brackets that have worked loose over time. Rolling a wheel back into the channel is the easy part. We determine the cause, correct it, realign the vertical and horizontal sections and run the door through its full travel.

How You Can Tell It Has Jumped

  • Rollers sticking out of the channel

One or more wheels have escaped the metal track, most often down by the floor or at the bend where the track turns overhead.

  • The door sits twisted in the opening

A visible gap on one side and a tilted bottom edge show that a corner has lost support or come loose.

  • A dented or bowed track

Track hit by a bumper or pulled from the wall lets rollers escape. It needs straightening or replacement of that section.

How We Set It Straight

  1. 1

    Brace and secure the door

We brace the door and relieve unsafe tension so it can be worked on without shifting or dropping.

  2. 2

    Repair or replace damaged parts

Bent track, broken rollers, torn brackets and creased panel edges are assessed, and what can be saved is saved.

  3. 3

    Realign and secure the track

Vertical and horizontal sections are leveled, spaced to suit the rollers and fastened firmly to the framing.

  4. 4

    Trace the cause and test

We look for the reason it came off, such as cables or worn hardware, then cycle the door several times to confirm smooth travel.

Questions About Off-Track Doors

Can I just push the rollers back in?

It is risky. The door may still be supported by a spring under tension, and the track could be bent. Forcing it can bend panels or make the door fall. Leaving it alone until it can be checked is the safe choice.

Is a bent track always replaced?

Not always. Minor bends can often be straightened and rechecked for smooth roller travel. Creased or twisted track, or sections that have pulled away from the wall, are better replaced so the rollers stay put and the door does not jump again.

Why do shop and barn doors come off track more?

Larger doors are heavier, track runs are longer, and vehicles and equipment pass closer to the edges. Constant use also loosens brackets and wears rollers, so these doors benefit from regular checks that spot trouble before the door leaves its track.
