The Springs Carry the Door, Not the Opener
A garage door can weigh several hundred pounds, and its springs counterbalance nearly all of that. The opener merely steers the door along the track. Once a spring lets go, the opener is left lifting dead weight it was never built to handle.
Standard springs are made for roughly ten thousand open-and-close cycles, and a busy shop or farm door can reach that sooner than a household one. We replace either coil springs on a bar over the door or extension springs beside the tracks, chosen by wire gauge, length and diameter, and longer-life options are available.
How a Failed Spring Shows Up
A sharp bang from the garage
Bar-mounted springs usually break with a loud crack. Look above the door for a visible gap where the coil has split.
The motor runs but the door barely rises
Missing the spring's help, the door outweighs what the opener can manage, so it may budge a few inches and quit.
The door feels heavy or falls when lifted partway
A balanced door stays in place at the halfway point. One that sinks or takes real effort has weak or broken springs.
What Spring Replacement Involves
- 1
Identify the right spring
We measure the existing wire and length and weigh up the door, including any added insulation or windows, to pick a properly matched spring.
- 2
Replace springs as a pair
On doors with two springs we usually advise replacing both, since the second one has done the same work and is likely close behind.
- 3
Check the supporting parts
Cables, drums, bearings and brackets that share the load are looked over and swapped if worn, so the new springs are not stressed by old hardware.
- 4
Set tension and balance the door
Tension is wound to suit the door, then the door is lifted by hand and cycled to confirm it holds steady and moves evenly.
Spring Questions
How long should a garage door spring last?
Most standard springs manage about ten thousand cycles, which can mean several years in a house and less on a door used many times a day. Heat, rust and a heavy door shorten that. Higher-cycle springs extend it.
Why not wind a new spring myself?
The spring stores a great deal of energy, and the winding bars can slip and strike hard. Springs must also match the door's weight exactly or the door will be off balance. It is best left to a technician with the correct tools.
Can I open the door by hand after a spring breaks?
You can disconnect the opener with the release cord, but the door will be very heavy and may drop. It is safer to leave it where it is and have it looked at before lifting it.
