Two Thin Cables Hold Up a Heavy Door
Lift cables run from brackets at the bottom corners of the door up to drums or pulleys, and they transfer the springs' pull to the door. Each one carries a large share of the weight, so when one frays or slips, the door tilts and can jam in the track.
Cables seldom fail without a cause. A worn bracket, a drum that has loosened, a door that jumped the track, or rust built up on strands can all be behind it. We replace both cables together, deal with the underlying problem and set the tension evenly.
Cable Warning Signs
One corner sits lower
If one corner sits higher than the other, a cable has stretched, slipped off its drum or broken outright.
A cable dangles beside the track
A slack cable that has left its drum or pulley can snag or kink as the door moves. Do not run the opener.
Strands splitting near the lower bracket
Visible fraying means the cable is losing strength and may fail suddenly when the door is lifting its full load.
How the Cable Swap Goes
- 1
Secure the door first
The door is held safely in place and spring tension is controlled before any cable is touched.
- 2
Replace both cables together
Cables wear alike, so new ones go on both sides, which keeps the door from lifting one corner ahead of the other.
- 3
Fix what caused the failure
Worn brackets, loose drums or bent track sections are repaired or replaced so the new cables do not suffer the same fate.
- 4
Set even tension and test
Both sides are brought to matching tension and the door is cycled several times to confirm it rises and lowers squarely.
Cable Questions
Can I keep using the door with one cable frayed?
We would not. A frayed cable can part without warning, dropping one side of the door and possibly onto a car or a person. Keep the door closed, keep people and vehicles clear, and have the cable replaced before the door is used again.
Why does the door jump off track after a cable fails?
With a cable gone, only one side of the door is supported. The door twists, a roller leaves the track, and the opener can push it further out of place. Stopping the moment you notice a problem limits how much gets damaged.
Do cables rust faster on a working property?
Moisture, dust and chemicals around sheds and barns can speed corrosion on the strands. Regular inspection catches wear before it becomes a break, and we replace tired cables during maintenance visits, together with the drums and brackets they run through.
Cable Loose or Door Crooked?
Cables and door tilt are easier to judge from a description than you might think. Describe the slack or sag and we will outline the likely fix.
